If you’ve used Instant Agenda before, you know that there are more ways to use it than just the typical work meeting. And with the new year just beginning, New Year’s Resolutions are hot on everyone’s mind.
So here’s yet another use for Instant Agenda, and how it can help plan and stick to your goals for 2018.
1. Create a Brainstorming Space
For most brainstorming sessions, a Quick Meeting might get the job done, but for things that are more structured, a full meeting is better suited. So, create a meeting for brainstorming – I used a planned meeting here because I’m just brainstorming with myself, but I could have made a collaborative meeting if I wanted to brainstorm with friends or family.
2. Create Sections for Each Area of Growth
You might already have some goals in mind, but before diving in, create a topic for each area of your life you want to improve. Examples might be financial, health/fitness, career, relationships, personal growth, or fun/recreation.
As you create each topic, consider how important it is to you, and let that reflect in how long you set for the topic time. If you’re feeling pretty good about your finances, for example, perhaps just set aside a few minutes to reflect on what you did last year so you can keep the same momentum this year.
Additionally, set each topic to recurring. Why? Setting a goal is one thing, but following up on it is the key to getting it done, and so this brainstorming session will double as a check-in throughout the year. Perhaps your focus will change over time (and that’s fine), but you are the moderator of your own success and you need to follow through if you want to make the most of the next 365 days.

3. “Run” Your Brainstorming Session
Given how much time you’ve accumulated for your brainstorming session (which you can see at the top of your agenda), schedule time in your day to sit down and “run” it like you would any other meeting.
As each area of growth comes through and you’re brainstorming goals, ask yourself these three things:
- What do I want to improve
- What do I want to keep doing well and
- How can I measure this?
Just as in a normal meeting, make sure you know what questions you are answering so you don’t lose focus and purpose. And also make sure to stick to your allotted time – chances are that if you didn’t come up with something in the time you gave yourself, it doesn’t have a very high priority.
4. Create Action Items
As you brainstorm, think about how your goals can be broken down into achievable targets throughout the year. Then, create action items for them and set the due date to be the next time you’ll check in with your progress. I’m going to be checking in on a monthly cadence, so I will be setting my targets to be due in one month.
5. Check-in on a Regular Basis
Circling back to this throughout the year is what will keep you focused on your goals. “Run” your session again and see if your goals have changed, and if not, how you have worked to achieve them. Then, focus on what you will do for the next chunk of time to continue your momentum towards a better you.
At the end of the year, even if you haven’t achieved all of your goals, using this method of planning and follow up will have great impacts on your year. And, you’ll have all your reflections in the history of the meeting, so it’s easy to look back and see what you were struggling with a year ago and how much you’ve grown, whether you noticed it or not.
